Georgiana Darcy, Basic Character Information

Georgiana Darcy is the sweet but painfully shy younger sister and ward of Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Basic Information:

Age: 16 as of August, when she is described as being “little over sixteen” in Darcy’s famous letter he states that she was “but fifteen” the previous summer. Both of those descriptors make me think that her birthday likely takes in the spring or summer, partially because it makes Wickham all the more evil.

Guardians: Fitzwilliam Darcy (her brother) & Colonel Fitzwilliam (her cousin)

Primary Residence: In London during the events of the novel and at Pemberley following her brother’s marriage.

Physical Characteristics: Georgiana is tall, with a formed figure and a womanly and graceful appearance. She is less handsome than her brother, but with good humor in her face.

Personality Characteristics: Georgiana is timid, prone to embarrassment and “exceedingly shy” but frequently misunderstood as being “exceedingly proud.” Her manners are described as being unassuming and gentle. She is also eager to please her brother, who she looks up to almost as a second father (according to him) and writes a very long letter detailing her happiness when he becomes engaged to Elizabeth.

Accomplishments: Georgiana sings, plays the piano and the harp, paints and draws. This should not be considered a comprehensive list.

What to call her:

  • Georgiana – close friends and family also, the narrator refers to her as both Georgiana and Miss Darcy with a fair degree of interchangeability when they are at Pemberley and with Georgiana becoming more frequent as the novel progresses. Lady Catherine calls her Georgiana when speaking about her, as does Darcy when he writes his letter to Elizabeth.
  • Miss Darcy – Since she has no sisters, Georgiana will almost exclusively be Miss Darcy among people who are not authorized to call her by her first name, this includes the Bingleys. The exception I can think of is servants who might merely address her as “miss.” In the beginning of the novel, she is generally Miss Darcy or some variation of Darcy’s sister.

  1. I would guess probably not, though we don't know for sure.

    My reasoning:

    1. While we do see her acting as part of her brother's Pemberley house party, that appears to be only among a small number of close acquaintances (and acquaintances that her brother would like to become close) in her family home, so I wouldn't give that as evidence that she is out.
    2. Georgiana and Lydia are approximately the same age and Elizabeth acknowledges that Lydia is a little young to be out when Lady Catherine expresses her surprised disapproval that Elizabeth's "very young" younger sisters are all out, I am going to go
    3. Neither Georgiana nor her brother appear fond enough of socializing to make me think that they would fast track Georgiana's entry to the wider social world.
